Safety

McKay Drilling ensures that the health and safety of its employees are at the forefront of its business activities. Safety is therefore a core management issue.

McKay Drilling has a genuine belief that Zero Harm is a philosophy that can be achieved and is only obtainable with the unconditional cooperation and support from all departments within the company's operations. McKay Drilling has developed comprehensive systems to assist with this philosophy, these systems commence during the recruitment phase of employment.

During recruitment, prospective employees undergo thorough assessments which involve pre-employment medical assessments, position specific functional assessments, Mine Workers Health Surveillance plus drug and alcohol testing. Following this, new employees commence a company induction, Workshop facility induction, rig specific induction and undergo in-house assessments on position specific tasks.

This initial training and some basic external training forms the foundation for offsiders to succeed within the first year before completing a nationally accredited certification in drilling. Health and safety is managed by the OHS department. This department is responsible for implementing the companies Safety Management Systems, safety training and auditing.

In addition, operational drill co-ordinators are heavily involved in the communication and training of all safety aspects within the company and assist with hazard identification and mitigation.

This is achieved through the operation of the companies risk management software, of which all appropriate personnel have access and the ability to provide hazard control measures and action item close out dates to ensure hazards are eliminated or controlled within a timely manner.

McKay Drilling is currently seeking to align its Safety Management System with AS/NZ 4801:2001, Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.
